Gopalganj, Bangladesh | Special Report | 02/08/2026
A case involving the alleged public humiliation and physical abuse of an underage Hindu girl and a boy at a school in Kashiani, Gopalganj, has sparked concern after a video of the incident circulated on social media. The girl’s family says she later attempted suicide by consuming poison following the incident.
The incident allegedly occurred around noon on July 28 at a secondary school in Kashiani upazila. According to local sources, the Class 8 student and the boy were brought to the school after being taken from outside the school and from his home respectively.
They were allegedly tied to a tree on the school premises and subjected to physical and mental abuse in the presence of teachers, students and local residents. The circumstances that led to the two students being brought to the school and the reasons behind the alleged punishment have not been independently established.
The girl’s family claims that the public humiliation left her severely distressed and that she subsequently attempted to take her own life by consuming poison. She was initially taken to a local health facility before being transferred to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital, where she is reportedly receiving treatment. A video recorded at the scene was later shared on social media, drawing criticism and concern from students, parents and residents in the area. The girl’s family has called for a proper investigation and legal action against anyone found responsible. Questions have also been raised over the school’s response to the incident. The head teacher said he was not present at the school on the day and learned about what had happened later.
Kashiani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman said police had not received a formal complaint at the time of his statement. He said appropriate legal action would be taken following an investigation if a complaint was submitted. The allegations, including the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the subsequent suicide attempt, require investigation by the relevant authorities.
