Hindu Family’s Gold and Cash Worth Over Tk 700,000 Stolen in Satkhira; Four Family Members Fall Ill

10 october, 2026- Satkhira:- Four members of a Hindu family in Brahmarajpur village, Satkhira Sadar Upazila, reportedly fell ill before their home was burgled, with gold jewelry and cash worth more than Tk 700,000 allegedly stolen. Police have collected samples of cooked rice and water to investigate the possibility of contamination, but no test results have confirmed the presence of any poisonous substance.

According to the family, the incident occurred overnight on Friday, October 9. The theft came to light on Saturday morning when they discovered that window and veranda grilles had been cut, household belongings were scattered, and a showcase drawer had been broken.

Sanjay, also known as Liton Saha, son of Nitai Saha, suspects that a toxic substance may have been mixed into the family’s food or drinking water. However, there is currently no laboratory evidence confirming his suspicion or establishing a connection between the family members’ illness and the burglary.

Four Family Members Reportedly Fall Ill

According to Sanjay, his wife, Mousa Rani Saha, and their younger son, Dipta Saha, became ill on Friday morning while returning from the market. After returning home, Sanjay himself, his mother Monika Saha, and his elder daughter Piu Saha also reportedly fell ill. Piu is an eighth-grade student at Satkhira DB Girls’ School.

Sanjay said the family received treatment from a local practitioner identified as Bikash. The cause of their illness and the nature of their symptoms have not yet been established in the information available.

Gold Jewelry and Cash Allegedly Stolen

Sanjay said the family ate dinner at around 11 p.m. on Friday and went to sleep. On Saturday morning, they discovered that the grille on a rear-room window had been cut. The grille on the front veranda was also reportedly found cut, while belongings inside the house had been scattered and a showcase drawer had been broken.

According to Sanjay, the stolen items included three gold chains, two pairs of gold earrings, a pair of shakha bangles, a pair of ear ornaments, two gold rings, two chain pendants, a mangalsutra, and Tk 150,000 in cash.

The family estimates the total value of the missing property at more than Tk 700,000. This figure is based on the family’s account and has not been independently verified.

Police Collect Food and Water Samples

Sanjay suspects that a toxic substance may have been added to food or water kept in the kitchen area, causing the family members to become ill and leaving them vulnerable to burglary. This remains an allegation, however, and has not been confirmed by test results.

Habibur Rahman, an assistant sub-inspector in charge of the Brahmarajpur police outpost, said he collected samples of cooked rice and water from the scene. He asked the affected family to submit a written complaint to the police station, after which further legal action would be considered.

The investigation will need to establish whether the samples contain any harmful substance and whether the reported illness was connected to the theft. Investigators may also examine the cut grilles, possible entry and exit routes, CCTV footage, and other evidence to identify those responsible.
