04 October, 2026 – SUNAMGANJ, Bangladesh: Tofazzul Haque Bapon, 28, member secretary of the Shalla upazila unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, has been accused of abducting a 20-year-old woman in Sunamganj district. The allegation has caused a stir in the local community.
The woman’s father filed a written complaint with the police, alleging that Bapon had taken his daughter away and that he had been unable to contact or locate her since the incident. Bapon is the son of Biron Mia and a resident of Sultanpur village in Bahara Union, Shalla upazila.
Mohammad Sohel, officer-in-charge of Shalla Police Station, confirmed that a case was registered on Sunday following the allegation that Bapon had abducted a young woman from Ghunghiargaon village. Attempts to contact Bapon by phone to obtain his response to the allegations were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone was switched off.
Tarek Hasan Munna, convener of the Shalla upazila unit of Chhatra Dal, said Bapon had been verbally instructed to stay away from the organisation about a year earlier because of concerns about his conduct. He added that after learning of the abduction allegation, he informed the Sunamganj district Chhatra Dal president so that organisational action could be considered.
Mohammad Tarek Mia, president of Sunamganj district Chhatra Dal, said Bapon had previously been verbally removed from the organisation because he was not active. He added that local residents had claimed the woman and Bapon were in a romantic relationship. However, given the specific allegation against him, the organisation would formally expel him.
Ubaidul Islam, general secretary of Sunamganj district Chhatra Dal, said the organisation would investigate allegations against any of its members and take strict organisational action if warranted.
The abduction allegation remains under investigation. Bapon’s response could not be obtained, and the available report does not establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s disappearance.
