12 october, 2026 – Chattagram: Two families in Raozan, Chattogram, have lost their homes in a fire just days before Durga Puja, destroying cash, gold jewelry, furniture, two cows, and new clothes purchased for the festival. The affected families estimate their losses at around Tk 1.5 million.
The fire broke out at around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday night at the home of Ram Dayal Majhi in Ward No. 6 of Dabuya Union, Raozan Upazila.
Family members Narayan Chowdhury and Bijoy Chowdhury alleged that miscreants deliberately set fire to their homes.
“Both of our houses have been completely burned down. Nothing remains. Our cash, gold jewelry, cows, and clothes purchased for Puja—all have been destroyed. Before we could understand what was happening, we had lost everything,” Narayan Chowdhury said.
Bijoy Chowdhury said their houses and a nearby haystack were set on fire. He also alleged that an attempt was made to set fire to another house at the same time, suggesting that the incident was premeditated.
According to the affected families, the fire destroyed approximately Tk 30,000 in cash, furniture, two cows, and other belongings, causing losses estimated at Tk 1.5 million.
The incident has left the families devastated as they were preparing to celebrate Durga Puja. Their newly purchased festival clothes and essential household belongings were also destroyed in the fire.
The identities of those responsible for the alleged arson have not yet been established.
Mahfuz Riben, warehouse inspector at the Raozan Fire Service Station, told Dhaka Post that they received information about the fire at around 3:00 a.m. Firefighters rescued property worth approximately Tk 2 million, he said, adding that extinguishing the fire took time because flames were present at multiple locations.
He noted that the victims suspected deliberate arson, but the cause of the fire would need to be determined through an investigation.
