23 September, 2026 – Kushtia, Bangladesh: A dispute has emerged in Kushtia Sadar Upazila following allegations that a group of youths cooked meat and held a picnic at the Harinarayanpur Mahashmashan, with some allegedly taking photographs while standing on a cremation pyre and a memorial wearing shoes.
The incident reportedly occurred on September 22, 2026. Photos and videos of the alleged activities later circulated on social media, causing concern and dissatisfaction among local members of the Hindu community.
Local residents and community representatives subsequently attempted to resolve the matter through a settlement. However, a dispute reportedly arose on September 23 over the signing of a written settlement agreement. According to local sources, not all individuals who had allegedly taken responsibility during the previous night’s discussion signed the document.
Later that evening, Bipul Kumar Saha, general secretary of the Harinarayanpur Mahashmashan Committee, allegedly became involved in an altercation over the settlement document. Saha claimed that he was assaulted at around 7:00 p.m. in front of a warehouse near Lakshan Jute Mill in Harinarayanpur.
The alleged assault reportedly involved Bakkar, the father of one of the youths accused in connection with the original incident. However, the accused person’s statement was not available.
It remains unclear from the available information whether a separate case or written complaint has been filed over the alleged assault or whether police have taken legal action.
Local members of the Hindu community are demanding security for the Mahashmashan, a proper investigation into the allegations, and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. They have also urged the administration and law enforcement agencies to ensure that the incident does not lead to communal tension.
