Fresh concerns over the safety of minority communities in rural Bangladesh have emerged after a Hindu family in Bagerhat alleged that they were threatened and intimidated by a group of men attempting to pressure them into leaving their ancestral home.

The incident reportedly took place on the evening of 22 May 2026 in the Borobaria Bazar area of Chitalmari upazila, where members of the Mondal family claim a group of individuals entered their property and verbally threatened them.

According to the family, tensions had been building for months over attempts to seize their homestead land. Relatives say they had been facing repeated pressure, intimidation, and warnings connected to the property dispute before the latest confrontation escalated.

Family members alleged that several men entered the home of the late schoolteacher Madhusudan Mondal and aggressively confronted his son, Rupa Sindhu Mondal, along with other relatives inside the house.

Witnesses said the atmosphere quickly turned hostile.

The family claims they were verbally abused and warned to leave the area. During the confrontation, threats of violence were allegedly made if they refused to vacate the property.

One of the most alarming allegations, according to the victims, was that they were told they would be killed if they continued living in the village instead of leaving for India.

The accusation has intensified fear among the family, particularly among women and children, who reportedly remain terrified following the incident.

“We have lived here peacefully for generations,” Rupa Sindhu Mondal said while speaking about the situation. “But recently pressure over our land has increased. Now we are directly being threatened, and our family no longer feels safe.”

The allegations have sparked concern among local residents, many of whom fear the situation could further escalate if authorities fail to intervene quickly.

Several neighbors described the incident as deeply disturbing and urged the administration to ensure protection for the affected family.

Rights observers say disputes involving minority-owned property in Bangladesh have frequently become sources of tension in rural communities, particularly when vulnerable families feel isolated or unsupported.

Human rights advocates also warn that threats and intimidation targeting minority households can create long-term fear and insecurity far beyond a single incident.

As of now, authorities have not publicly released a detailed statement regarding the allegations. However, local residents and community voices continue calling for a transparent investigation and immediate legal action if evidence supporting the claims is found.

For the Mondal family, the uncertainty remains overwhelming.

“We only want to live safely in our own home,” one family member said quietly. “Right now, we are living in fear every day.”
