Hindu Gold Trader Monoranjan Karmakar Brutally Attacked and Robbed in Manikganj; Suffers Serious Head Injuries

06 November, 2026 – MANIKGANJ, Bangladesh — Monoranjan Karmakar, a Hindu gold trader, was seriously injured in a sudden roadside attack and robbery while returning home after closing his shop in Harirampur Upazila of Manikganj district.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 8:30 pm last Thursday in Jatrapur village, near the residence of a local resident identified as Nur Alam.

According to accounts of the incident, Karmakar was on his way home after closing his business for the day when unidentified assailants, who were allegedly lying in wait, suddenly attacked him near Nur Alam’s residence. The attackers reportedly struck him repeatedly, leaving him severely wounded and bleeding heavily, before snatching the bag he was carrying and fleeing the scene.

Following the attack, local residents and passers-by noticed bloodstains scattered across the road and a piece of dry wood lying nearby. Initial accounts could not establish whether the assailants had used a heavy blunt object or a sharp weapon. However, the force of the assault left Karmakar unconscious and critically injured at the scene.

Local people rushed to his assistance, rescued him and took him to Harirampur Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical treatment. As his condition was considered serious, doctors referred him to Manikganj Medical College Hospital for further evaluation and advanced treatment.

Dr Asim Sarkar, the attending medical officer at Harirampur Upazila Health Complex, said Karmakar had sustained a deep and serious injury to the back of his head. He had suffered substantial blood loss, and multiple stitches were required to close the wound. Given the severity of the injury, doctors strongly recommended an urgent CT scan of his head and referred him to Manikganj Medical College Hospital.

Police from Harirampur Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Sheikh Faruk, visited the scene after receiving information about the incident and initiated an investigation.

According to police, the bag taken by the attackers reportedly contained no gold or valuable jewellery. During a search of the crime scene, officers recovered a dried coconut palm branch, locally known as baigra, which is suspected to have been used in the assault. However, its role in the attack has yet to be confirmed.

Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Superintendent of Police in Manikganj, said the incident was being treated with utmost seriousness and that a specialised police team had begun working to identify those responsible. He added that legal proceedings were underway and that efforts were being made to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The attack on a Hindu businessman has raised concerns among members of the local Hindu community about personal safety and the security of people conducting their businesses. Residents are demanding the prompt identification and arrest of those involved, along with appropriate legal action.

The motive behind the attack and the identities of the assailants remain unknown as the police investigation continues.
