Man Dies Seven Days After Being Beaten at Rice Mill Over Theft Allegation

Dhaka, 15|08|2026
A 30-year-old man in Dhamrai, on the outskirts of Dhaka, has died seven days after he was allegedly taken from his home and beaten at a local rice mill over accusations of stealing a motor component.

The deceased, Shankar Mondal, was the son of Badan Chandra Mondal and lived in the West Kayet Para area of Dhamrai Municipality.

Shankar died at his home on Saturday morning, 15 August. According to his family, he had been taken to Wazed Haji’s rice mill on 8 August after being suspected of involvement in the theft of a motor component from the mill.

Family members and local residents said Shankar’s father, Badan Chandra Mondal, and a local resident, Ziaur Rahman, accompanied him to the rice mill.

According to them, after they entered the mill, Shankar’s father and Ziaur Rahman were asked to leave the premises. Shankar was then beaten inside the mill, the family said.

He was released later in the night and left the mill in a seriously injured condition. He was subsequently admitted to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex.

Doctors advised the family to take him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment. However, the family said they could not afford the cost of taking him to Dhaka.

Shankar remained at home and received treatment while recovering from his injuries. His condition later deteriorated, and he died on Saturday morning.

His father, Badan Chandra Mondal, said his son worked with him and had been taken to the rice mill over the theft allegation.

“My son works with me. He was taken there over an accusation of theft. I and another person went with him. Later, we were sent outside and he was beaten inside. He was released at night. After taking him to hospital, the doctors advised us to take him to Dhaka, but we did not have the money. Today, my son has died.”

The circumstances surrounding Shankar’s death and the events at the rice mill are expected to be investigated by the authorities.
