Rangpur, 13 December 2025 (VOM):- Police have arrested a man in connection with the brutal murder of freedom fighter Yogesh Chandra Roy and his wife Subarna Roy at their home in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur. The suspect was arrested early Friday morning from the Shermosta Balapara area under Alampur Union.
The arrested man has been identified as Morshalin (22). According to the investigation officer of the case, Abu Saiyum Talukder, Morshalin had worked at Yogesh Chandra Roy’s house as a tile worker two days before the murders.
Previously, on Saturday night, freedom fighter and retired teacher Yogesh Chandra Roy and his wife Subarna Roy were found murdered at their residence in Rahimapur village under Kursha Union of Taraganj upazila. On Sunday morning, neighbors received no response despite calling out to them. Later, they entered the house and discovered the couple’s blood-stained bodies.
Following the incident, the couple’s elder son, Shobhen Chandra Roy, filed a murder case at Taraganj Police Station against unidentified individuals. Morshalin has now been shown arrested in that case.
Police said that after his arrest, Morshalin was taken to Yogesh Chandra Roy’s house around 11:00 am on Friday. Based on his statements, police recovered a machete (da) from the house and the wooden handle of an axe from a nearby pond, which were allegedly used in the killings. Morshalin had worked at the house for three days as an assistant to a tile mason and knew that the elderly couple lived alone.
Investigators said Morshalin was under financial pressure due to an outstanding debt of Tk 8,000. While working at the house, he assumed that the family kept cash there. In desperation to repay the debt, he went to Rahimapur village carrying an axe from the house and killed Subarna Roy first, followed by Yogesh Chandra Roy. He then broke open an almirah with a machete in search of money but failed to find any.
After the murders, Morshalin escaped by climbing a mango tree, reaching the bathroom roof, and then descending via a jackfruit tree behind the house. He later threw the axe into a nearby pond and fled. Police said there was no prior personal enmity between Morshalin and the victims.
On Friday afternoon, a large crowd gathered at the scene following news of the weapon recovery. Morshalin was seen demonstrating to police how he escaped after committing the murders. Authorities were draining water from the pond using a shallow machine in an attempt to recover the iron part of the axe.
The victims’ elder son, Shobhen Chandra Roy, said, “While working at our house, Morshalin stole one of my mother’s saris worth about Tk 5,000 and a clay money bank. He later took Tk 2,000. We learned about this from neighbors after returning home. My parents never told us about it. The murderer of my parents has been arrested. I want the death penalty to be carried out.”
Rangpur Superintendent of Police Marufat Hossain said that Morshalin confessed to the killings after his arrest. “He committed the murders alone using an axe taken from the house. He killed Subarna Roy first and then Yogesh Chandra Roy. The axe handle has been recovered from the pond, and efforts are ongoing to retrieve the iron part by draining the water,” he said.
Meanwhile, at around 3:00 pm on Friday, police visited Morshalin’s house in Shermosta Balapara village under Alampur Union but did not find his parents there. His sister, Rimi Akter, said Morshalin is a second-year degree student at Taraganj Government College. The family has four siblings—his elder brother works in Rajshahi, one sister is married, and Morshalin is the youngest.
She further said that Morshalin’s elder brother had sent Tk 8,000 to the family from Rajshahi, but Morshalin did not hand over the money to their parents, which had caused ongoing family disputes.
