28 September, 2026 – Sunamganj :- A Hindu youth was allegedly subjected to social humiliation and physical assault in Dirai, Sunamganj, after a misleading Facebook video reportedly made unsubstantiated allegations against him.
According to the allegations, local working-class youth Rony Baidya became the target of a video posted on Facebook by journalist Moshahid Ahmed. The video reportedly claimed that Rony had been caught engaging in immoral activities. However, the claim was allegedly made without presenting any conclusive evidence.
Following the spread of the video, several young men from a local madrasa reportedly gathered at the scene and physically assaulted Rony without independently verifying the allegations. Local sources alleged that Rony faced discriminatory treatment because he belongs to the Hindu community.
Police later arrived at the scene after being informed and brought the situation under control.
Around four hours after the incident, journalist Moshahid Ahmed reportedly deleted the original video from his Facebook account and published another post. In the subsequent post, he acknowledged that Rony was an innocent and good person and had no involvement in the alleged incident.
Moshahid also reportedly said that an inquiry in the area had found no evidence of any immoral activity involving Rony and requested other Facebook users who had shared the original video to remove it.
The incident has reportedly sparked concern and criticism over the consequences of publishing unverified allegations that may expose an individual to mob violence, physical assault and reputational harm.
Local concerned residents have called for an impartial investigation into the incident, accountability for those involved in the assault, and measures to prevent harassment of members of religious minority communities based on unverified allegations.
