14 September, 2026 – Jashore, Bangladesh: Local Jubo Dal leaders have been accused of allegedly entering the home of a Hindu family late at night in Bagherpara and demanding extortion money, issuing threats, and forcibly taking cash. The family later raised the allegation at a meeting of the Upazila Law and Order Committee and subsequently submitted a written complaint to Bagherpara Police Station. Police said they were verifying the allegations and preparing to register a case.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 1:30am on Sunday night at the home of Sukumar Gain, a resident of Galgalia village in Dohakula Union.
According to the victim’s family and local sources, six to seven people, allegedly led by Anisur Rahman, the purported president of the Dohakula Union unit of Jubo Dal, went to Sukumar Gain’s house. The alleged perpetrators reportedly called Sukumar by name and threatened him, forcing the family to open the door.
After entering the house, they allegedly threatened to implicate the family in false cases and have them arrested by police, while demanding Tk 50,000 in extortion. Out of fear, the family allegedly handed over Tk 13,500 kept in the house. The alleged perpetrators reportedly continued threatening the family members for about an hour after taking the money.
Shikha Gain, Sukumar’s wife, alleged that the group verbally abused them and referred to their plans to travel to India.
“They abused us using extremely offensive language and said, ‘You are going to India, so you have to give us Tk 50,000. Otherwise, we will have you arrested by the police and file a case against you.’ My husband has been suffering from a complicated illness for a long time. We had sold some land to take him to India for treatment. They forcibly took Tk 13,500 from that money,” she alleged.
During the incident, neighbors learned what was happening and informed Golam Mostofa, a local resident. Mostofa said that while they were heading toward Sukumar’s house, they saw Anisur Rahman, Rabi, Billal, and several others in the Kutibari Bazar area. He said they attempted to speak with them, but the men quickly left the area.
The incident has reportedly caused anger among residents of Dohakula Union. Local residents alleged that since August 2024, there had been several incidents of alleged extortion and intimidation involving some Jubo Dal activists in the area, although many people had been reluctant to speak publicly out of fear.
The following day, Monday, the Upazila Monthly Law and Order Committee held its meeting. The victim’s family attended the meeting along with local residents and raised the allegations before the authorities.
At the meeting, Jashore-4 MP and district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Golam Rasul, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Bhupali Sarkar, and Bagherpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahajlal Alam advised the family to pursue legal action.
Sukumar Gain later submitted a written complaint to Bagherpara Police Station naming three individuals.
OC Shahajlal Alam said the police had received the complaint from the victim’s family. He said the allegations were being thoroughly examined and that preparations were underway to register a case. Legal action would be taken against those found involved following the investigation.
