18 September- 2026, Patuakhali:- A BNP leader has been accused of threatening a businessman in Bauphal Upazila of Patuakhali. An audio recording of a 1-minute and 57-second phone conversation containing the alleged threat has spread across social media.
The businessman who received the threat, Gobinda Chandra Mondal, filed a General Diary (GD) against the BNP leader on Thursday, according to Bauphal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sirajul Islam.
Gobinda Mondal, 52, is a resident of Bauphal Sadar Union. He runs a land trading business in Dhaka and also owns cattle and poultry farms, as well as fish enclosures in his locality. He has announced his intention to contest the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) election for the post of chairman and has put up banners and posters in the area.
The person named in the GD is Md. Farid Uddin Gazi, 60, a member of the Bauphal Upazila BNP. He is a resident of Bilbilash village under Bauphal Sadar Union.
OC Sirajul Islam said, “After receiving the court’s order regarding the GD filed by businessman Gobinda Chandra Mondal, we will investigate and take legal action accordingly. However, after the businessman filed the GD, we visited the area on Thursday evening and learned that Farid Gazi was an accused in a cheque fraud case.”
He added that Farid Gazi was later arrested in the cheque fraud case and sent to jail through the court.
According to the GD, Gobinda has been receiving regular threats since announcing his candidacy in the UP election. As part of those threats, the BNP leader allegedly threatened to burn him alive.
