At least six people were injured after two groups clashed with locally made weapons over a long-running land dispute in Bangladesh’s northern Dinajpur district.

The incident took place at around 10am on Monday, 3 August, in Muchibari Sarkarpara village of Shatgram Union under Birganj upazila.

The injured were identified as Lakkhan Roy, Shukra Roy, Profulla Roy, Harish Roy, Kamla Roy and Badhubala Roy. Several of them were reportedly in serious condition and were taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for treatment.

According to local residents, the dispute centers on a parcel of land in the Muchibari mouza, recorded under JL No. 87, CS Khatian No. 237 and Plot No. 1523. The disagreement has reportedly continued for years and has also been the subject of litigation.

The conflict intensified after a recent ruling by the Additional District Magistrate’s Court in Dinajpur, which, according to the family of Lakkhan Roy, went in their favour. The opposing party in the case was identified as Mamun-or-Rashid, a resident of the same village.

Tensions reportedly escalated on Monday morning when both sides attempted to assert control over the disputed property. The confrontation eventually turned violent, with members of the two groups allegedly using locally made weapons against one another.

Six people were injured in the clash.

However, the opposing side has rejected the allegations surrounding the ownership of the land. Zahidul Islam, speaking on behalf of the other party, said they had legally purchased the property many years ago and maintained that they were its rightful owners.

Lakkhan Roy’s family, meanwhile, maintains that the land legally belongs to them and points to the recent court ruling as support for their claim.

Local resident Usha Rani Roy said emergency services were alerted by calling Bangladesh’s national emergency number, 999, after the violence broke out. Police subsequently informed a local Union Parishad member, who arrived at the scene and helped arrange transportation for the injured to hospital.

The confrontation caused temporary tension in the area, but local sources said the situation later returned to normal.

Authorities are now expected to examine the competing claims over the property and the circumstances that led to the violent confrontation. Any further legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation and the evidence presented by the parties
