A 71-year-old former teacher of Notre Dame College was found dead at his residence in Dhaka’s Kalabagan area on Monday morning, with police saying his family believes he died by suicide.

The deceased was identified as Dhirendra Kumar Roy, who was found hanging inside his home at Green Road in the capital.

According to police, Roy’s daughter discovered him at the residence in the morning. With assistance from neighbors, she reportedly brought him to the emergency department of Green Life Hospital, where doctors examined him and declared him dead at around 9:15 a.m. Kalabagan police said the family had informed them that Roy had apparently taken his own life without his daughter’s knowledge while she was asleep.

Police said Roy’s wife, Dipali Roy, works as a schoolteacher and had left home for work earlier that morning. Their daughter was reportedly at home at the time. According to information provided by the family, Roy had been experiencing severe depression for a prolonged period and had been receiving mental-health treatment since 2025.

Police also said the family had a history of suicide, with two of Roy’s brothers reportedly having died by suicide in the past. Authorities have not indicated any other circumstances surrounding his death and said the matter was being handled according to standard investigative procedures. The incident has drawn attention to the importance of mental-health support, particularly for people experiencing prolonged depression and psychological distress.
