Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh, October 29, 2026: A 30-year-old Hindu youth, Tapas Debnath, was reportedly seriously injured in a sharp-weapon attack after allegedly refusing to pay extortion money in Bitghar village, under Panishwar Union of Sarail Upazila, Brahmanbaria district.
The attack reportedly took place at around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, on the road in front of Tapas’s home. His family has accused a local man, identified as Hefuz Mia, of carrying out the assault.
According to the victim’s family, Hefuz Mia allegedly attacked Tapas with a sharp weapon in what they described as a premeditated assault. Tapas sustained two serious injuries to his head and was taken for medical treatment. His family stated that more than ten stitches were required to close the wounds.
The family alleged that the attack followed months of extortion demands and death threats. According to their account, Hefuz Mia had demanded money from the family approximately three months earlier. After they refused to pay, he allegedly threatened them with death on several occasions.
The family further claimed that Hefuz Mia had recently returned to the area and resumed demanding money. They said they had informed his relatives and family members about his alleged conduct, but those individuals reportedly denied responsibility for his actions and distanced themselves from him.
According to the victim’s family, the alleged extortion demands, threats, and attempts to resolve the dispute locally were known to many residents of Bitghar village. The reported attack on Tuesday night has heightened concerns about the family’s safety.
The victim’s family and members of the local Hindu community have called for a fair investigation, legal action against the accused, and effective measures to ensure the family’s protection.
The allegations against Hefuz Mia have not been independently verified. Further investigation is needed to establish the circumstances of the attack and determine responsibility.
